Steff Dowle launches SGD Safeguarding Consultants

SGD Safeguarding Consultants have come from a background not as you might expect. Steff Dowle completed 24 years in the British Army as an infantryman and senior warrant officer and with experience of operational war fighting and peacekeeping all over the world. Transforming this highly varied and successful career into civilian employment upon retirement from the army was not going to be easy. Steff found himself employed at a prestigious 100% boarding school, initially as cadet and ceremonial instructor, but with some responsibility for the student leadership programme.

Steff quickly applied his years of mentoring, safeguarding and wellbeing experience and training he had gained from his career in the army to the students in his care. Qualifying as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), and gaining experience, training and experince in welfare, wellbeing and behaviour Steff was able to gain the respect, confidence and trust from the staff and students and eventually promotion to Head of Safeguarding, Wellbeing, Welfare and Behaviour with managerial responsibility for SEN, Medical, Counselling (mental health) and Pastoral care within the school. Continuing to apply these skills to everyday life in a 100% boarding school Steff was quickly able to additionally apply his positive strategic thinking to improving these areas of school life. In particular recognising the importance of providing a rounded and transparent system of care encompassing all aspects of his remit to provide a wholly supportive care package. Ensuring this focussed primarily on preventative therapy and strategies thus reducing the need for extensive and intrusive counselling, time off school and parental concerns. By providing mental health training for staff, improving the sharing of vital information amongst the relevant professionals and providing coping skills to students to manage anxiety, stress and other significant mental health concerns that students were experiencing, the school saw a greatly improved student learning capacity, improved behaviour, social interaction and retention.

Steff was able to establish a rapport with students, staff and parents and became a respected and trusted member of the senior leadership team where he was able to influence positive change and have a positive impact on whole school improvement.

He now brings these qualities to SGD Safeguarding Consultants to improve safeguarding training for all educational settings and businesses requiring safeguarding training or consultancy.
